WELLINGTON COLLEGE

ERECTION OF ASSEMBLY HALL.

The Wellington College Board of Governors met this morning, the chairman, Mr. W. F. Ward, presiding.

The headmaster (Mr. T. R, Cress-well) reported that there were 803 boys on the roll, of whom 252 were new pupib. The increase over last year was 36, and was mainly due to the large number of old pupils who had returned. The increase in the upper part of the school had necessitated the formation of two new fifth forms. The accommodation was very congested, but the teachers were prepared to make the best of the trying conditions in the hope that there would be an improvement next year. The increase in the numbers had made it necessary to have a double assembly, the east and west schools being used simultaneously.

In respect to the advisability of putting in hand the erection of a new assembly hall, Mr. Crosswell said it was very discouraging to the Old Boys' Association, after collecting over £5000 for a definite and very laudable purpose, to learn that the money had to remain unexpended indefinitely. He suggested that the Department should be asked to authorise tho preparation of the ground plan of a new school, for the-purpose of fixing the exact site of the new assembly hall, and that the shell of the ball bo erected so that the association could proceed with the expenditure of tho money in hand. The ball could then be used for the daily assembly and for all public functions, while the classrooms grew up around it. The report was receivedIt was reported that owing to a University national scholarship having been awarded to Janet MoncrieiT, of the Girls' College, she could not continue to hold the Mary Shcolarship. The board decided to award the scholarship to Mary Shalcra-ss, who was next in order of merit. The headmistress (Miss M'Lean) reported that the attendance was 778 girls, us itgnitisL 755 <tl> the sumo p«igd lust :, year.
