MIRA CETI

The Hector Observatory advises that, in connection with the recent report of the discovery of a new star. Ihe following particulars of Mira Coti (the wonderful variable star in the constellation Cettis) are of interest:—ln the British .Astronomical Association Handbook for 1923 the maximum brightness is predicted for Ist March, the limits of magnitude being 2 to 9.7, and tire period of visibility 329 days. The American authorities state that the n-tar was expected to be between the magnitudes 8 and 10 on Ist January, 1923. and they predict the maximum for 2nd April. Mira Coti is in Ui-rht Ascension 2h 15.6 m, and Declination 3deg 19:uin S. ft crosses the meridian of Wellington at an altitude of 52deg 3mm on Ist March ar 3.35 p.m., and en 10th March at 2.59 p.m.
