FUNERAL OF SIR WILLIAM HERRIES
GREAT TRIBUTE AT TE AROHA.
(DT TGLSGXAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) TE AROHA, 26th February. The interment of the cremated remains of the late Sir William Herries took place here to-day. There was a large assemblage at the railway station as the tram bearing the remains arrived. The casket was escorted along the platform, followed by the Prime Minister as chief mourner, and members of the Cabinet and both Houses of Parliament. Also in attendance were Sir Joseph Ward, Sir Frederick Lang, the late Minister's private secretaries, Messrs. Johnscgi and Balneavis, representatives o£ the Go-vernor-General, Railways, Native Affairs, Defence, Customs, and other Departments of which Sir William had controlled or with which he had been associated in a Ministerial capacity, all local bodies in the Tauranga electorate, drainage boards, Polo Club, Returned Soldieva' Association, agricultural associations, Jockey and Trotting Clubs, sports bodies, Hospital Board, Education Board, fire brigade, and municipal band. In addition, there were scores of private cars.
The funeral procession passed from the railway station to St. Mark's Anglican Church, where a brief but beautiful ceremony was conducted by Archdeacon Cowie, an old friend. The procession, headed by the Municipal Band and the fire brigade, traversed Kenrick street and Stajiley road to the cemetery, where Archdeacon Cowie, assisted by the Rev. R. L. Connolly, Vicar of St. Mark's, conducted the burial service.
Members of the district local bodies acted as pall-bearors at tho church, and members of tho Ministry were pallbearers at the graveside. The procession was well over » mile in length, raid, included 120 motor-cars, many horse-drawn vehicle^, and hundreds of pedestrians. Scores of beautiful wreaths were laid on the grave.
