ABANDONMENT OF MATCH

Considerable discussion occurred at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Cricket Association last evening, following receipt of two telegrams from South, one from the manager of the Wellington representative touring team, and the other from the secretary of the Otago Cricket Association. The messages announced that the Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Otago had been abandoned owing to the ground being in an unfit state for nlay, and to the fact that difficulty had been experienced in obtaining leave for several of the southern players. • It was also stated that this course had been taken at the instigation of the local association, that it had been apr^roved by the New Zealand Council and that a match had been arranged between Wellington and Canterbury for the Plunket Shield.

The chairman (Mr. 0. G. Wilson) moved taat a protest against the abandonment of this match be forwarded to th« New Zealand Council, pointing out that thie was contrary to the rules governing Plunket Shield matches. : Mr. D. M'Kenzie: "I suggest that we claim the Mr. H. Buck : "It is high time that we found out where we are in this matter, anyway."

The chairman pointed out that the wording of the rule was: "That Plunket Shield matches shall be played to a finish." The council had no power to over-ride the rule.

Mr. Buck: "When the council says that, this match is to be abandoned, it exceeds its power. It will be coming alone; next and telling us how to spend our balance."

Mr. M'eKnzie: "There is no question about it. The council can't overlook its own rule."

The chairman's motion was carried,
