AMATEUR ATHLETICS
EVENING MEETING
The Athletic Football Sports Club held a sports meeting at Athletic Park,last evening. Although the weather was bleak there were good entries for all events, the competitors including athletes from Otago. The visitors did not meet with much success. M'Meiken, competing in the 220 yards hurdles event, was the only one to obtain a place. In the absence of a starter, Mr. J. W. Heenan dispatched the fields. Eesults are as follow : —
100 Yards Handicap.—First heat: F J. Keddell (10yds), 1; A. Stevenson (B,yds), 2; H. UnderhiJl (74yds), 3. Also started: H. Morgan (Otago, scr) A.. J. White (Byds), F. Hobbs (7yds). Tune, 10 l-ssec. Lander (40ft). 100 Yards Ladies' Handicap.—Miss M'Partland (12yds), 1; Miss M. Hayvice (syds), 2; Miss E. Posselt (6yds), 6. Also started: Misses H. Bennett (3yds), F. Martin (7yds), A. Posselt (8 yds), M. Bennett (9yds). Won by half a yard. Time,. 12 3-ssec.
Boys' Race.—R. Peterson, 1; T. Montgomery, 2; E. Kidd, 3.
One Mile Walk.—W. Tompkins (160 yds), 1; J. W, Lankshear (160yds), 2: J. Futter (50yds), 3. Also started: F. C. Hickling (scr), G. Hiclding (40yds), R. Young (100yds). Lankshear led over the last lap until the straight was entered, when Tompkins finished well to win by two yards. Time, 7min 3sec. 1000 Yards Handicap.—C. Rowe (5 yds), 1; W. Melrose (15yds), 2; M. Rose (65yds), 3. Also started: H. M'Cormick "(25yds), C. A. Wiilis (4Oyds), D. Gillies (50yds), S. Willis (65yds)* M. Walls (50yds), J. Jacobsen (50yds), C. Bowler (50yds), L. C. Todd (65yds), I. Stevenson (50 yds), R. Spence (66yds). Entering the last lap Rowe and Melrose had moved up to good positions, and the latter was well clear of Rowe coming to the straight. Rowe then made his run, and staving off a challenge from Melrose, ho won by two yards. Rose was eight yards further back. Time, 2min 23 1-5 sec.
220 Yards Hurdles Handicap.—E. Jacobsen (scr). 1; E. M'Meiken, Otago (10yds behind), 2: J. O. Malfroy (20 yds hehind), 3. Also started: C. Louis (10yds behind), L. Richardson (10yds behind). Jacobsen, showing good form, led all tho way and won comfortably. Richardson fell. Time, 31 l-ssec.
