THE EASTERN SUBURBS
MEETING OF CITIZENS. A meeting of the Eastern Suburbs Citizens' League was held this week, Mr. A. C. Blake (president) presiding over a good attendance. After a discussion upon the coming municipal elections, Messrs. A. C. Blake and A. J. Jorgenson were appointed as delegates to the Civic League Election Committee. As the Department had requested an expression of opinion from associations on the proposed new telephone cliarges, a committee was set up to go into the matter of the charges in so far as they affect subscribers in the eastern suburbs. This committee is to interview the Department and obtain the costs of specific connections under the proposed new charges as compared with the charges now being made for same. With this information at its disposal, the league will be able to decide whether or not to support the proposed new charges. A committee was set up to go into the matter of tram fares to bona fide residents of the suburbs travelling 3, 4, 5, and 6 sections. The tramway authorities are to be asked to receive a deputation from the league to consider a suggestion that monthly concession tickets at a reduced, rate be issued to these residents. It was pointed out that the high fares on the trams do not encourage the people to live in the suburbs.
