CRICKET IN NEW ZEALAND

TOUR A FINANCIAL FAILURE

IGNORANCE OF PLAYERS AND PRESS.

(t'NIIBD PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPIIIISHI.)

SYDNEY, 21st February

Mr. A. C. MacLaren states that the New Zealand tour was a financial failure. There were too many provincial matches, entailing much expenditure of time, energy, and money in travelling, which the gates seldom warranted.

Mr. MacLaren said that at Nelson some New Zealand players hardly knew the handle from the blade of the bat. He complained that a number of minor newspapers attacked his team and also local players. These attacks he attributed to the ignorance of the writers, who. he said, were uracquainted with cricket. Mr. MacLaren added that while in Now Zealand he rarely read the reports of matches, as they were not worth reading. He suggested that the standard of the game in the Dominion would be raised and public interest aroused by the dispatch of a team to England to play a series of matches against the weaker counties. Mr. MacLaren concluded by eulogising the treatment received from officials and players.
