HIGH PRICES FOR FRIESIANS.
Messrs. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., report that the fourth annual sale of surplus stock, held at Invercargill on Friday, on behalf of Mr. W. D. Hunt, attracted a record attendance of breeders from all parts of the Dominion. The top price of the sale was paid for the five months' old bull calf. Baiuiield King Rozine, by Mr. W. H. Hoskin. of Mangatoki, Tarauaki. This is the champion butter-fat bred bull of Australasia. The records of his four nearest dams averaged 8161b of butter-fat. His dam gave 8101b of butterfat, his granddam S3olb, and his sire's two nearest dams' records average S2llb of fat. A half-sister tested as a heifer gave SOGlb of fat, his grandam 9831b, and he has also a strain of breeding similar to that of the cow, which gave 11451b of fat in the year. Other of tliG bull calves iiiude up to itiO guineas, and the 22 calves averaged £W 12 lid, the buyers representing the Auckland, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland provinces.
Last year Mr. Hunt offered a selection of his well-bred heifers, and these averaged £105, at that time a record average for heifers. This record was easily beaten this year, as the line of heifers, most of which were yearlings, averaged £130 6s. The top price was 255 guineas, paid by Mr. F. Smedley, of
"Sunnyhurst," Auckland, for Bainfkld Woodcrest Sylvia Pauline. Other high priced heifers were sold to Messrs. Bingley Bros., Papatoetoe, Auckland, at 170 guineas; Mr. P. F Bouchier, Kuineu, Auckland, at 170 guineas; Mr. W. Y. Dickie, Southland, at 150 guineas; Mr. T. Sherrifi, Canterbury, at 130 guineas; aud Mr. C. J. Payne, Dunedin, at 102J- guineas.
The annual draft of stud and flocK Eomney rams was also sold without reserve, and the prices received were .00 per cent, in advance of last year. The draft comprised 305 twotooth rams, and these averaged fS 7s. ' The average price for the ten stud rams was £32 ICs 3d. Mr. A. H. Wright, of Russell, Bay of Islands, paid the top price of 04 guineas, and other prices paid v.-ere Cl guineas, 52J guineas,- 45 guineas, 'etc.
A large number of the flock rams were again bought for the North. Island, the buyers being Messrs. C. F. Baker, North Auckland; G. Jury, Wairarapa; Ray Sutherland, Wanganui; H. Groves, Masterton; W. Darcy, Wanganui; K. Hammond. Wanganui; and Dalgety and Co. Local competition was very keen, and the prices were maintained right through. The too price for flock rams'was 13 guineas.
The sale realised £5440, being an increase over last year of £1500. Messrs. Wright, Stephenson. and Co., Ltd.. announce that the average price fnr the heifers is a record for all breeds for New Zealand.
