WRONG VALUES

DISTORTED HERO-WORSHIP,

Speaking on the subject of "The Cinema Star and the Crowd" at St. Andrew's Church, Auckland, the Rev. J. Lamb Harvey said that what was wrong with the world at present was that it was suffering from a sense of wrong values. High values were put on small things, and" small values on big things. Lately in England, Earl Haig, the greatest "soldier of his time, _ arrived in a city the same day as the cinema artist who, at the instance of a newspaper, had been chosen as the best type of girl to compete with similar artists of other countries. The streets were blocked with people eager to see her and she was unable to attend half the functions arranged for her. Yet the only qualification she had for such attention was that she had been born into the world with a pretty face. The great soldier on the other hand, who had done so much for the world, waa allowed to pass up the streets almost unnoticed. The cinema star later went to America, and in New York 80,000 welcomes were flashed out to meet her. Two nations were at her feet. The excitability of the people reminded one of the moth and the candle. Values were wrong, crowds filled the biggest halls to see prize-fighters, but if a debate on a great social problem were announced the hall would be empty. The great equalising power of the world was the gospel of Jesus Christ, and when the world got back to proper values the love of God would bind up the wounds of the nationsCof the earth.
