GIRL CHAMPIONS

NEW ZEALANDERS AGAIN VIC

TORIOUS.

(DSIIED TRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPXRIGHT.I

SYDNEY, 21st February. The 220 Yards Championship of Aub tralia resulted : —

Miss Gwitha Shand (N.Z.) „ Miss Violent Walrond (N.Z.) Miss Wylie (iM'.S.W.)

Miss Shand won by three yards. Miss Walrond finished four yards ahead of Miss Wylie. Time., 2miu 54 2-6 sec.

Tlie competitors left the board together, Miss Wylie being the first to assume command as the result of clever turning. Miss Walrond lost ground at each turn through the erroneous method she adopted in turning. Miss Shand challenged Miss Wylie in the third lap, and soon established a lead, which Miss Walrond unavailingly endeavoured to reduce, Miss Wylie meanwhile lagging behind. Miss Shand's time is 3 2-ssec outside the record.

The time given in the above race is not the best that has been credited to Miss Shand. On the occasion of her visit to Honolulu she swam the- distancein 2min fSsec, which is equal to Miss Fanny Durack's best time. The cabled information that Miss Shand's time is 3 2-ssec outside the record does not agree with the fastest times so far recorded for this distance, nor is it stated whether it is the Australian or world's record that she has failed to reach. The list of records still shows tho holder to bo Miss Bleibtrey, with 2min 53sec, but since she accomplished this time, it hat been shattered by three other women swimmers, Miss Helen Wainwright registering the phenomenal time ot 2min 41 l-ssec, and the next best being Airs. Charlotte Boyles, 2min 47Jsec, followed by Miss Marie Wehselau's 2min 52 4-ssec. Miss Wainwright's time will probably be recognised as the worlds record, in which case Jliss Shand was 13 l-ssec outside the record.
