ENGINEERS AT FORT DORSET

Last week Fort Dorset was ,transformed from its usual peaceful appearance into a hive of martial activity. The Central Depot, N.Z. Corps of Engineers, w-as holding seven days' continuous training, and as the engineering knowledge widened, the neighbourhood of the fort became a maze of trenches and wire entanglements; while strange otructures of spars appeared and disappeared' on the parade ground, and, at intervals, the demolition squad hurled rock and old iron over the sea front as they showed the disruptive effects of the übiquitous guncotton. The week endea in a social gathering for the friends of the men on Friday afternoon. Tea was provided in the mess-room, which had been transformed with flags and bunting into a most artistically decorated hall. After a stroll round the works, enabling the guides to air newly-gained knowledge, the party embarked on the Janie Snddon, and returned to the city via the bays.

On Saturday morning the General Officer Commanding X.Z. Military Forces, Major-General Sir E. W. C. "Chaytor, inspected the company at work and presented cups. He expressed his pleasure at having the opportunity of seeing the unit, and complimented the men on their pp'oearar.ce and the work they had done.
