CONTEST AT PAEKAKARIKI

HARD-FOUGHT COMPETITIONS.

Beautiful weather, a large crowd, and the best life-saving demonstrations yet seen on Paekaka-riki Beach made yesterday a day that will long be talked of in the township. The competitions were for the silver cup subscribed for by the residents of Paekakariki in memory of Mr. John Sanderson, who was drowned at Paekakariki in November, 1921, and who was a prominent member and qualified instructor of the Royal Life-saving Society; and for the silver cup presented by Mr. K. Kennedy far the march past competition life-saving, 1923. A huge crowd watched the proceedings, which wore a. success in every way, the efficiency of the teams being most noticeable. MARCH PAST. The march past took place in the morning, eight teams competing, and only 17 points divided first and last, first and second going to Lyall Bay A and B teams respectively. The awards were as follow :— Lyall Bay "A" : W. Astbridge (captain), D. Murrell, N. Campbell, I/. Dawkins, F. Mollkr, C. Claridge, J. Evett. R. Sutton, 35 points, 1. Lyall Bay "B" : A. Watts (captain), L. Beggs, F. Thomas, J. Hickey, L. Jones, E.. Bolston, W. Shannon, S. 11. Wright, 90 points, 2. Worser Bay: W. Lavelle (captain), A. Thomas, J. Blakeney, J. Lavello, L. Grimstone, B. Kennedy, C. Young, J. Alexander. 89 points, 3." Paekakariki A, 89 points, 4; Maranui A, 85 points, 5: Paekakariki B, 82 points, 6; Island Bay, 81 points, 7; Maranui B, 78 points, 8. In the Sanderson Memorial contest, the two leading teams were only onethirtieth of a point apart. Each judge awarded his own points, and these were afterwards averaged. When it was discovered that so little separated the Maranui and .Lyall Bay teams, the captains were consulted, and both decided that the award should be made even if there was such a narrow margin. The result was as follows :— Maranui "A" : W. Taylor, J. Swain, V. Fletcher. J. Whisker, E. Hughes, F. Adams, T. N. Foden, R. Ross—99 20----30 points, 1. Lyall Bay "A": N. H. Campbell, F. Mollier, R. Sutton, L. Dawkins, D. Murrell, C. Claridge, G. Evett, W. Ashbridge—99 19-30 points, 2. Maranui "B" : G. Blackburn, J. Chapman, D. A. Claridge, S. Morgan, W S. Kirk, A. R. Marshall, S. J. Hammond. K. Croft—99-i points, 3. Worser Bay, 9Ck points, 4; Lyall Bay B, 84 2-5 points, 5; Island Bay, 84 1-3 points, 6; Paekakariki, 77 14-15 points, 7. • - , Several addresses were delivered. Mr. S. J. Sleeman welcomed the visitors, and explained that the cups would be competed for annually at Paekakariki. Mr. G. S. Hill remarked on the great humane work done by the demonstrators, and congratulated the township on the. organisation of -.uch a function. Referring to the Sanderson Cup, he said he would like to thank the residents, and all who subscribed to that trophy the finest ever presented in New Zealand'for anything connected with swimming, and worth 50 guineas. (Applause.) He hoped that some day teams from all over the Dominion would compete for it. Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., said he was surprised by the nature of the demonstration and -its instructive capabilities. It was a magnificent work they were doing, and life-saving clubs deserved all the support which the public could give them.
