SWIMMING
WELLINGTON CLUB CARNIVAL
GOOD TIMES-
A varied programme, which occupied "nearly three hours, was presented at To Aro baths on Saturday afternoon before a fair attendance by the Wellington Swimming Club. Several championships were swum, and two attempts were made by Enwright to break 60 seconds, the New Zealand record for 100 yards. He should have done it, especially with the pace he showed on the second fifty yards of the second hundred, but on each occasion he swam crooked and got into the swirl of another swimmer. Though he ploughed through this and did not appear to touch the other man,the lost time. In the first 100 he was a second over the time, and in the second he was fourfifths over it. D. Murrell had a day out, and won both the 100 yards and 440 yards , provincial championships, beating C. Claridge by. about a length and a half to two lengths in each case. Both swimmers are representatives of the Olympia Club. The 440 was a splendid battle, the two being together at the last turn, but Murrell was more steady, and kept his line, which Claridge failed to do, and had a reserve for the last, forty yards. Hicks, a promising lad, won the junior diving banner. In this event the diving on the low board was good, but every competitor .turned over from the high board. The Swimmers' Memorial Cup, a still-water life-saving competition judged on time, in which the patient had on each of four methods to be towed 20 yards, was won easily by Lyall Bay. Maranui were favourites, but were only third at.the finish. Lyall Bay secured its advantage from a very fine tow by L. Salek, and a second win with close finishes in the other tows gave them an easy victory. Pocock made an easy win oE the 100 yards handicap. Several cup events for school children were also decided, the lad Bridson making a very fine sprint in one of them. After the diving event, Hicks, whose form in the competition was poor, did some "stunt" diving, in which he make a splendid showing. He thrilled the audience by his "Leap for Life" dive, in which he balanced on the rail of the solid high diving platform, jumped on to the high board some ten feet below, and dived with the throw secured from the board some twenty feet out into the water. On the whole the carnival was a specially good one. Results:—
