AUCKLAND, 26th January. The Auckland lawn tennis championship tournament commenced to-day. The weather was fine, but the courts heavy after torrential rain last evening. The New South Wales ladies are com- ■ peting and won their matches easily, though in the doubles Misses Witherow and Tlamsay, Auckland, played an evert set with Mrs. Lascelles and Miss Gray. The first set went to the Australians, 6-l A but in the second they had a harder struggle, winning, 8-6. The present hold-' er of the men's singles, Sim, .won hi» first match, 6-1, 6-fl.
