MUNICIPAL ELECTION

THE POLL IN APRIL

MAYORiAIi CANDIDATES.

The municipal election will be held in April. Councillors C. J. B. Norwood and J. M. Dale indicated at a function in the Mayor's room last night that they would not be standing for re-election to the council, next year.

In all probability,- the present Mayor, Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., will again contest the aM^yoral election, and it is understood that there is a possibility of Councillor L. S. M'Kenzie being 'a candidate: In addition, the name of Mr. H. E. Combs, who unsuccessfully contested the Wellington North Parliamentary election against Sir John Luke, is. mentioned as being a likely nominee of •the Labour Party for the Mayoral Chair. To-day, Mr. D. M'Laren, secretary of the Civic League, stated that the question of the candidates for the Mayoralty had not yet been ■ considered by th© league, but representations had ' been made to him from a, number of quarters that Colonel G. Mitchell would be an eminently desirable man to fill the office of Mayor on the ground that his services to the city in connection with local government affairs had been of a very earnest and high order. "Persons in various walks of life—men connected with business, working men, and people of practically all classes—have made representations to me in this direction," said Mr. M'Laren. "I have been informed that a requisition will be presented to Colonel Mitchell asking him to , allow himself to be nominated. This has been wholly apart from the Wellington Civic League, which body will, I expect, at an early date, go into the whole, matter of the coming municipal election. I •want it distinctly understood that the > Civic League will deal with the matter entirely apart from any issue relating to general politics, and I take this opportunity, now that the Parliamentary election is over, to state very definitely that rumours which have been put'about that the Civic League is swayed by Parliamentary considerations are utterly -unfounded. Since the formation of the league, I have been present at every meeting it has held, and, have to state that never on • any occasion has, any question been raised relating'to politics, -candidates, or parties."
