Mr. W. H. Morton, City Engineer, is indisposed, and intends taking a holiday at Rotorua. ,
A letter of sympathy is .to be forwarded by the City Council to Councillor M'Vicar, whose husband is at present seriously ill. ■
Mr. A. R. Atkinson has been appointed the Corporation's assessor with respect to a claim for compensation for land taken at Adams street foV streetwidening purpose's.
Mr. George Matheson, of the J. C. Williamson, Ltd., managerial staff, has arrived from Sydney' to make arrangements for the New Zealand tour of the distinguished English comedian, Mr. Lawrence Grossmith.
Mr. Maurice Ralph, so long associated with the J. and N. Tait and J. C. Williamson management, has been appointed touring manager of the Westminster ■Glee Singers, now on a world's tour. The company isl Hue by the Ruapehu in Jandary. 'The itinerary of,the company will embrace New Zealand, Australia, Africa, Canada, India, and the East.
At the Midland Hotel last night a complimentary dinner to Mr. E. Stooke ..and Mr. J. T. Donnison, delegates from Australia, who have been in New Zealand for the past two months, was given by the •National Council of the Licensed Trade in New Zealand. Eepresentatives of all branches of the Trade were present, and the function was most successful. Mr. T. Madden, chairman xof the National Council, presided. v
Mr. Harold Beauchamp, the former chairman of the Bank of New Zealand, who resigned in order to visit London and: New York, was present at the halfyearly meeting of the bank to-day. Mr. George Elliot, the chairman remarked: "Our colleague", Mr. Beauchamp, left New Zealand in April last on a visit to the Old Country. He' returned Jast month, I jyn pleased to say, with renewed health and vigour. He has been in touch with banking conditions abroad, and the fresh knowledge he has gained will be of value to the bank. We welcome him back to our councils. ''
* The death took place at Opotiki'on Friday of Mr. William Walter Chalklen, in his 86th year,, one of the few surviving Maori War veterans resident at tiki. Mr. Chalklen was born at Cork, Ireland, and -went to Australia as a boy with his parents. He arrived in New ■ Zealand in 1863. He joined the Ist Waikato Regiment and served with that unit throughout ;the Maori War. After the."Maori War, Mr. Chalklen joined the Armed Constabulary in 1869, and was discharged at his own request in 1878... He then iook up farming in the Taupo distriot, -and in 1881 went to Opotiki and had resided there ever since. ' - •■■ ■
The funeral of the late Mr. T. R. Wallace, late secretary of the Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers, took place yesterday, and ■ was largely attended. ' The institute was- represented by the president, the executive, and a large number of members, also representatives of the Australian districts, ai the former secretary, Mr. A. R. Hislop. The shipping and engineering industries were well represented.' Among those present were Sir John Luke and representatives of the Union Steam Ship Company, ' the Merchant Servipe Guild, Wellington Harbour * Board, Shipowners' .Federation, Marine Department, ' Ironmasters' Association, City Corporation, Lloyd's Register, British Corporation. There was a large muster of members of Lodge Waterloo, and the service at the graveside was taken by Archdeacon Johnson, P.G-M. Bro. G. Russell, and W.M. Bro. A. Wilson.
