OILFIELD BATTLES
THE LIFE IN ARKANSAS
GAMBLERS FIGHTING CITIZENS.
(tUfITID PItEBS ASSOCIATION—COMMfIBT.) (AUSTRALIAN - NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received 16th December, noon.) EL DOEADO (Arkansas), 14th Dec. Gamblers and other underworld characters have renewed the battle with the citizens. Five people were shot and several stabbed in a "free for all" fight, in which the negroes joined the whisky runners and others in attacking the whites. The latter were finally victorious and placed in gaol a number of ths lawless party. ,
A mesage from El Dorado at the end of November stated that as in the gold rushes in America in '49, during the development of the goldfields, there were conflicts between gamblers and undesirables and self-appointed law forces^ 'so a fight had occurred in tho oilfields, involving two thousand vigilantes and socalled undesirables, resulting in many casualties. Some reports indicated that twenty-five were dead, though these were discounted. Disorders had recently been occurring in the oilfields, engendered by underworld enmities. Vigilantes paTaded the towns with placards asking the disturbers to quit. Sheriffs' posses were attempting to quell the commotion.
