The Herein massacre trial has begun at Marion, Illinois. Following th« reading of the indictment against five miners, counsel for the defence made a statement that the district was over-run "with professional man-killers, hired by these mines. These gunmen committed acts of •violence upon farmers and miners, resulting in the community rising up in defence of its homes.
