ANTI-VIVISECTION
A' move has just been made in VictorY towards the abolition of vivisection," by, the formation, of an organisation 'with; that object in view. ' ■ The promoter of the movement is Miss Frances Power Club", who founded, a society in England in 18,76,. with the object of agitating against what she held to be needless cruelty in the form of vivisection in" the interests:of science.. W has been estimated that in England some 70,000 vivisections are performed in a year, and many more at Rockefelle», Foundation, New York, but,, in Victoria only 150 such operations are performed! yearly, i Nevertheless, the society considers those operations 150 too many, and also aims to prevent the use of cows and horses for the purposes of vaccine, as it regards such a use as a cruelty to animals. In Victoria, the Govern-* ment has established a Serum Institute, and has also appointed medical men throughout the State' for/purposes of bacteriological research. The anti-viviseo tionists urge that research work as app plied tobacteriology means vivisection.
