MR. MITCHELL AT NEWTOWN.
Mr. G. Mitchell, Independent candidate for Wellington South, addressed a crowded meeting of electors at St. Thomas' Hall, Newtown, last evening. The candidate gave an account of his stewardship in the late Parliament. He spoke af length on the lines of his previous addresses—dealing specially with land settlement and unemployment. In reply to a question about retrenchment, Mr. Mitchell said he had opposed the Government's proposals in respect to re-, duction of wages. He believed the nationalisation of mines must come, and was of opinion that the WellingtonLyttelton ferry' service should be controlled by the State.
