WORKING MEN'S CLUB V. NGAIO

The above clubs played tKeir annual match at the rooms of the Working M«n's Club od Wednesday evening, a cordial welcome being extended to the visitors by. Mr. H. E. Long (hon. secretary). A close and hajcl-foughfr contest ensued. _ At the interval for refresh-' ments, Ngaio was "one-up,"- but the home t-eani later on drew up level, the tally being "six-all" at 11 p.m., and two games marked incomplete, viz, Barnes v. Lindsay, and S. Paulknor v. Topp. These were disposed of on Saturday, the Working Men's Club getting the verdict in each instance. The game' at board 3 was adjudicated in favour of Faulknpr, who was»a knight to the good, and had further gain in sight. The scores at boards 7, 8, 9, 10, It, and 12 counted as the play-off for the junior team's' championship ,of the- Wellington Chess League, Ngai\j winnina by one game (3* to ,2^). Mr. A. E. Ballard, president ,of( tho Working Men's Club; congratulated the Njraio Club on winning the playoff, and voiced the pleasure of the horns team in having their Ngaio friends with them that evening-. Mr. P. J. Brooker (president) happily acknowledged the compliment; and" expressed the-thanks of ,the Ngaio. team for the very enjoyable evening provided.
