HOUSES AND RENTS
TO HIE EDITOi;.
Sir, —As a Government supporter, I am ashamed to think; that the Government does not intend to extend the Eent Restriction Act beyond the end of this year, offering as an excuse that it restricts the building of new houses. I also regret that this is the opinion of the majority of members of Parliament. Well, if that is their opinion, I am sorry for their intelligence. ' It is the only Act the Government has passed since the war that has helped the poorer class of peopje. Now they intend to take this benefit away. If the members of the Government had courage they would have called evidence on this question before a Select Committee, and arrived at a fair rent. This is, in my opinion, a blot on Mr. Massey's administration. I "noticed a statement in last night's "Post," I presume, made by a Minister, that a five-roomed house is supposed to lodge seven and a half people. He forgot to tell us the size of the rooms. Some of the rooms in some of the houses in Wellington are not larger than a Saratoga trunk.—l am, etc.,
FAIR RENT.
