VICE-REGAL.
His Excellency the Governor-General is indisposed, and will be confined to Government House for some days. Her Excellency, who has been on a visit to Australia, is returning to Wellington by the Tahiti, which is due on Monday. Their Excellencies will visit Christchnrch at the beginning of November, and will be there during race week.
The Hon. E. P. Lee, Minister of Jultioe, left last night for the SoutE to be present as the representative of the Government at the handing over of the Mount Cook Hermitage to the lessee.
Mr. and Mrs. T. E. K. Burgess, of Lyall Bay, left by the Ulimaroa on an extended holiday visit to Australia.
Mr. R. Tait has been appointed by the City Council to be Acting-Town Clerk, during the absence through ill-health of the Town Clerk, Mr. J. R. Palmer. '
Mr. Frederick Shipman has arrived in Wellington to arrange for the visit of Messrs. Althouse and Middleton, the New York Metropolitan Opera artists.
The death of Mr. Louis J. Pirani, one of the proprietors and business manager of the "Feilding Star," occurred on Thursday night. He was a son of Mr. Fred Pirani, of Wellington. The funeral took place at Palmerston North to-day.
Bishop Whyte, of Dunedin, left Wellington by the Ulimaroa yesterday for Sydney to attend a conference of Roman Catholic archbishops and bishops of Australasia. Archbishop Redwood, of Wellington, is at present in Australia.
The Rev. R. M. Ryburn, director of youth work in connection with . the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, who has been visiting the British Isles and America, is expected to arrive in Christchurch on 17th October.
Aldermen Murray and Melville and Mr. Lawson, prominent officers. of the Newcastle abattoirs, were file guests of honour at Thursday's meeting of tho City Council. The visitors were formally ■welcomed by the Mayor, and Alderman Murray brieCy replied.
Commissioner Hoggard, the new chief of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, vas received at Government House on Thursday by His Excellency the Gov-ernor-General, who extended to him a hearty welcome to- the Dominion. His Excellency spoke of his admiration for and kfte'tr'interett in the good work of the Army in its many social activities.
