DUTY OUTSTANDING.
Beplying to a question by the Hon. J. A. llanan (lnvercargill) in the House of RepresentAtives yesterday, the Prime Minister said he was unable at the moment to givo the exact figures as to tho amount of death duty outstanding. charges. . Interest was paid on the amounts outstanding. Mr.. Hanan: "That is in the nature of a penalty?" . Mr. Massey: "No, it simply means that trustees who are not able to find the money in a reasonable time have the opportunity to allow the duty to remain outstanding and pay interest on it." A member: -How long are they allowed!" Mr. Massey: -"Six months. . Mr. G. Mitchell: "And what happens then?" ' Mr. Masaey: They pay interest."
