SURRENDER OF CARPENTER,

HOB ART, 13th October. When the police surrounded the hut, Carpenter was asked to surrender.
He replied by firing several charges from a shotgun, but screamed -when the police fire wounded him.
The police then rushed and broke into the hut.
[Three men lost their lives in the triple tragedy. Edward Duncombe, an old bushman, supposed to have money in his hut, was found murdered there. The body of Edward Carpenter was found nearby in the. bush. Trooper Henderson went, into the hut later unarmed, and was found dead by the driver-of his car, who, following him in, discovered traces of a terrible struggle. Parties of police and civilians scoured the-district round Swansea, the scene of the tragedies, and yesterday it was reported that a man named George Carpenter had been arrested in a hut seven miles a\va»y from thej, scene, after being severely wounded by police fira.
