I The ■political situation is developing Ma an amazing manner. Everybody is | hanging -on Lloyd George's and ChambeT- \ lain's coming speeches, the purport of | which nobody knows. The only appar- '{ ent certainty is the proximity of a Gens' eral Election. Various estimates of the '. date are all conjectural.
'. One usually .wolJ-informcd source suggests that Sir. Lloyd George, who is *i absolute arbiter of the matter, will effect fa dramatic coup by forcing an election /in' the first week in November. It is * significant- that his closest confidants I make no sign of knowledge. It is believed he "has not taken anybody into his confidence, except a few selected mem-. ) bers of the Cabinet. - , \ Some Conservatives advocate a wholesale stampede from the Coalition, even j mentioning Lord D«rbVo name as leader fof it. Lord Derby does not deny'nor (affirm the report. On this point the Coalitionists, notably the "Daily Chronicle," argue that if the f Conservatives fight the Coalition-Liber-als at the elections, Labour will possibly 6-win 200 to 850 seats. I' The '^Chronicle" declares that Labour- \ ifces are already counting on the possibility of a split, instancing the principal, .organiser's declaration in a recent speech i'that the Labourites will possibly be charged with the formation of a Government.
