WINGFIELD SCULLS

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) . LONDON, 4th August A few days ego Mr. D.. H. L. Gollan (Leander Club) met and defeated Mr. C. \V. Wise in the -preliminary heat for tho Wingfield Sculls and Amateur Championship of the Thames. Last Saturday Mr. Gollan met the holder, Mr. J. Beresford, jun. (Thames R.C.), fnd the latter gained a very easy victory in record time, completing the course in 22min 13seo. '

Mr. Gollan won the toss, and chose tho Middlesex station. There was a good tide running up, with a light headwind to the first bend. After one breakaway by Golkn, the scullers went off to a very level start, Beresford doing 17-31 to Gollan'a 17-30. Beresford gained a trine along tho boathouses, but it was a splen,did race to the mile-post, which Bereford reached half a length to the good in tain 205e0.. with both men doing 26.

After passing th© mile. Beresford spurted, and at once drew clear. He gained so fast that ho led by three lengths at Harrods'a Wharf and by nearly five at Hammersmith Bridge in the fast time of Bmin 27sec. Aboro the bridge both men were doing 24, with Gollan sculling very neatly, but making no impression on the leader. After Hammersmith, tho race developed into a procession. Bercsford reached Chiswick Stops in 13min 25sec, with a commanding lead. There was smooth water above, and keeping weLl out in mid-river, tho loader, who steered an excellent course, reached Barnes Bridge in 18min 20sec. Ho sculled eteadily to the finish, and reached tho winning post many lengths ahead in 22min lJisec— a record for a raco for tho Wingfields. GoLlan finished in 22min 45sec. Mr. F. I.
