In spite of the widespread popularity of ""broadcasting," it appears not to be .generally, -known that a system somewhat akin to it was In use in London at least a dozen years ago. .'lt was possible for any ' person having a , telephone ir^ the house' to~ have. an " electrophone " installed and to use it at an annual cost of five guineas. The Queen's Hall, the Albert Hall, several music halls, and one or two churches were connected with the central exchange. The procedurtplvas to ring up the telephpno exchange, ask for the electrophone exchange, and request to be connected to a given.hall or church. It was then only necessary to sit at ths fireside with a binaural receiver. There ■was an installation of this kind (wjltes a correspondent to the " Manchester Guardian ") in the house where I lodged in a London suburb in 1911. I remember returning from the Albert Hall, where Mr. Balfour had been speaking on 'the Minority Report of the Poor Law Commission, and discussing, the speech with, my landlord, who had heard it at home apparently more distinctly than I had. A strange sfglit in the bouse on Sunday evenings was to see an old lady of over 80 years sitting with Bible and hymn-book, in her lap, following tho service at a church in Highbury, 10 miles away, closing her eyes at prayer-time and maintaining a devout attitude throughout.
