The Amusement Tax Bill, which es» empts from the payment of amusementtax agricultural and' pastoral societies,, does not come iiito force until Ist November. The Ha-wkes Bay A. and P. Society's show, is set down for the 17th! and 18tli of this month, so Sir George Hunter (Waipa-wa). asked- in the Housa of Representatives yesterday whether the Prime Minister, if the exemption, could not be applied to. the Hawkefe Bay body, would put on the Supplementary Estimates a vote to enable the tax -to be refunded. The Prime Minister Said he did! not know at what stage the Bill stood at present, but if it had been signed by tha Governor-General that ■was the end. If, however, it had not been signed itmight be possible to . mike ah amendment to advance the date of the coming into force of the Bill. He did hot think it would be possible to place a vote on the Supplementary Estimates, for once the Treasury got hold of money it was very hard id get it away; again.
