LOCAL BODY DISQUALIFICATIONS.
.Whim the Electric Power Boards Amendment Bill was .considered in t'»a ■Legislative Council yesterday,.the Kon t J. :Barr raised the question" of the disqualification of members of local bodies who .might enter into contracts viUi councils or boards upon which they hay»; seats. He asserted that the present law was far tec drastic and prevented many able_ business men from offering then ' services to their townspeople. He wouldy go bo far as to say that the disqualification clauses should be repealed a 1 together. _ The Leader of the" Council (Sir William Fraser) stated that the amenrimenia made in the Bill under discussion opened the door a little wider, but they must be very careful not to go too far. He> did not intend to reflect on the honesty' of members of existing local bodies, but, they never knew when the existing disqualification clauses would be of tlje utmost value in protecting the interests, of the people. The Hon. Mr. Barr was content to? move an amendment to the disqualification clause providing that the disqualification _ should. not apply to transactions involving the lease or sale of land to or from a board. The Leader of the Council accepted ,tha amendments, which was agreed.to on the? voices. . •
