CIVIC LEAGUE
A well-attended meeting of the executive council of the Civic League was held on. Tuesday evening. Mr. W. S. Wilson, vice-president, occupied the chair.
Correspondence was received from several ratepayers'' associations endorsing the draft of policy submitted for their consideration; other associations intimated that they are offering suggestions by way of additions to the policy. The secretary reported on the meeting held in the Town Hall in connection with the projected city health week. The scheme was/very heartily supported by all present, 'each member offering to act on any committee they might be appointed to. ■A motion which had been previously tabled, " That members of tlhe City Council should be paid for their services," was discussed, but being put to tho vote only the mover supported it. The general view expressed was that ther» was a distinct danger on the line of commercialising civic service, and, whilst it was freely recognised that councillors'gave a great amount of time to the city, it was held that relief should come by way of reform of tho system of city governments, so that councillors would only have to "deal with questions of policy, and nothing else.
The question was raised as to the nonattendance of some members. The secretary reported the general attendance- as decidedly good, that only two or three were neglectful. It was decided to have a roll call at every meeting, as it was thought all members should attend regularly in justice to the associafjfcn they represent. «
