SUNDAY CHARGING AT THE ZOO.

The threatened battle in Committee on' the Wellington-City Council's proposal to charge for admission to the Newtowi) Zoo on Sundays took place in the House last night, but it was a very tame affair, due, no doubt, to the number of' Labour benches that were empty. Mr. V. H. Potter saiS that the city was losing about £3000 annually on the Zoo, and when a proposal was niado to reduce the loss by £1000 it should have the support of the House. i Mr. E. J. Howard contended that the city wag setting a bad example by'seeking to run a Sunday show and charge for it, in order to relieve the rates. To this Sir Maui Pomare responded that apparently Mr. Howard wanted the show, but he wanted it to be a free show. He did not think that was logical.

A member'attempted to brighten the debate by suggesting that it was zoological, but it did not succeed. Several other members suggested thai Wellington should be permitted to run its own affairs, and that outsiders, meaning members of Parliament, should not interfere.

The debate'wandered on for half an an hour or so without producing any new arguments for or against the proposal, and, on a division being taken, the clause Was retained by 41 votes to 20,
