Investigations by the French authorities regarding the Smyrna lire chow that there was, no ground for the tefugees' statements • that the Turks sprinkled streets and houses with petrol. On the contrary, before the fire Armenians were alleged to have thrown bombs from houses, and otherwise acted hostilely, whichy it is sincerely stated, caused the repressive measures of which the Armenians were the principal victims. /
