ONLY HALF A HOLIDAY
Yesterday's observance of Dominion Day again illustrated the need for revision of the holiday calendar—a need repeatedly expressed in these columns. In a large number of occupations- the holiday was not observed; but business for the day was considerably interfered with by the closing of important offices. This does not make for efficiency at a time when efficiency is most needed. It may be argued that New Zealand's elevation to the. status of a Dominion deserves commemoration; but yesterday's observance furnished no basis for this argument. Further, since Dominion Day was added to the holiday calendar there have been events which have robbed it of much of its significance. These events generally are commemorated by the observance of Anzac Day, which is a complete public holiday. Surely Parliament, in a session which is not notable for pressure of business, could spare an hour to put the matter on a more satisfactory footing. It would be interesting to hear the opinions of business men, who suffer a loss each year by the half-hearted observance of this holiday.
