PALMEKSTON N., 22nd Sept.
No new scholars can be admitted to the State schools in Palmerston North, all four having closed their rolls owing to the accommodation being overtaxed.
A start has been made with the erection of the new gasworks for the borough on the site on Napier road, Terrace End. The plant will cost about £40,000, and it is claimed that when completed the works will be the most up-to-date in the Dominion. A gasometer with a capacity of 500,000 cubic feet is to be erected. Vertical retorts are to be installed. 'Provision has been made for a siding from tho railway, and. the works are being arranged so that there will be the utmost economy in handling coal. The scheme, which has been designed by Mr. E. Rabbidge, the gasworks manager and engineer, will absorb 1200 tons of machinery and plant. At present twenty-five men are employed in preparing the foundations for the retort house, but within two or three weeks the number will be increased to fifty, v while within twelve months the council will spend £12,000 on labour alone in carrying out the work.
Messrs. Vine and Wilson will sell month-old chicks and general furniture in their auction rooms, Dominion avenue, 2 p.m., to-morrow.
Messrs. 0. W Price and Co., 78 and 80, Lambton quay, will sell furniture and billiard table in the rooms, to-morrow, commencing- at 1.30 p.m.

On Friday next, 29th inst., at 2 p.m., under instructions from the Public Trustee, in estate of the late A. T.
