SIXTH DAY'S CONTESTS

SONGS AND BALLETS.

The competitions in the Town Hall were continued daring yesterday, and the keenest interest was manifested in the various events.

There were six competitions in "Song in Character," under 9 years, and the judge gave the order of merit as fol-lows.:—-Miss Phyllis Round (Christchurch), 91 points, 1; Miss Phyllis Oliver (Wellington), 89 points, 2; Miss Una Smith (Wellington), 85 points, 5. Highly commended : Master Jack Sawyer (Wellington), Miss Irene Wilson (Lyall Bay), and Miss Kathleen Read (Christchurch). .

Only three entered for the "boy's song," under 12 (own selection), and the judge allotted the points in the following order : —Master H. J. Skeels (Auckland), "I Love the Moon," 86 points, 1; Master Harry Haigh (Wellington), "God's Garden," 84 points, 2; Master Jock Gaynor (Petone),, ''The Fairy Pipers," 75 points, 3.

Special interest centred in the decision given in the "English Song, soprano .or mezzo (own selection)." Seven ladies entered for the prize allotted, and after a most interesting contest , the judge stated his order of preference to be :— Miss Lilian Hanham (Chrigtchurch), "Spring's 'Awakening," 95 points, 1; Mies Elspeth Denholm (Oamaru), "My Dreamland Rose," 93 points, 2; Mies Jessie, Duff (Christchurch), ''Prelude," 87 points, 3. Highly . commended : Mrs. K. S. AlWght (Wellington), Miss Lilian Archibald (Christchurch), Miss Peggy Jones {Wellington), and Miss Gwen Evans (Wellington). The judge said that the winner had a very fine coloratura dramatic voice, but sang the high triplets in her song slightly sharp. The cadenza was very good, but a trifle too slow. Altogether, she gave a very 'fine operatic rendering. Miss Denholm had a good/well-produc-ed soprano voice, and sang very pathetically, and with clear enunciation. The third prize-winner had a good voice,. but she should produce it a little deeper and more heavily. The top F natural was a little , blatant, but otherwise, the performance -was'pleasing. Mr. Juncker (the judge) remarked that he, had not the slightest difficulty in awarding the first place to Mr. Claude C. Moss (Wellington) in the baritone solo, "A. Vagabond's Song (Cundell).'' He gave Mr. Moss 90 pointe, Mr. Ralph Holdgate (Timarn) 86 points, and Mr. Alex. Murray (Wellington) 84 points. In the elocution section, boys' recitation, ages 12 and under 16, "The New Moon (W. H. OgliWy), only three aspirants faced the judge, ..who awar/led first place to Master Bert Gopdland (Christchurch), 77 points; second, Master Gordon Glover (Wellington) and William Clark (Napier), equal,- 76 points; third, Masters Roland Boocock (Wellington) and R. Maunder (Petone), equal, .75 points. • Miss Ngaire Phipson (Wellington) was awarded first place in the contest for the jnnior test recital, girls, 14 to 16, own selection. The'winner was given 87 points for' her rendering \>i "The Sisters."/ Miss Thelma Aitken (Wellington), "Claribel's Prayer," 85 points, was second; and Miss Joyce Julian (Wellington), -'Marguerite," 82 points, was third. ... .

For humorous recitation, boys 12 and under 16, own selection, there were three entries, the. judge placing the contestants in the following order:—Master Arthur. , Grant. (Kilbirnie), "Jones, Minor,",; .79 . point*.:, 1; Master BertGbodland (Christchurch), "Following Doctor's Orders," 78 points, 2; Master Garnet Phillips (Hataitai), "Our-Family Troubles," 77 points, 3. , ■ ■ The judge awarded first place to Mr. Barton Ginger (Wellington), in the recital with musical accompaniment, humorous, own selection. The ■ winner rendered "The Three Trees," and was accorded 89 pomtß. The other two competitor* were Mr. F. S. Oooze (Wellington), 86 points, and Mr. Leith Riddell (Dnnedin), 84 points. For the character dance, 12 and, under 16, the results were:—Miss Join Marshall (Wellington), "Festive Dance," 88 points, 1; Mibs Joyce Julian (Wellington), "Russian Dance," and Miss Frances Clisby (Wellington), "RnjNian Mazurka," equal, 85 points, 2. Highly commended: Miss Sinclair Breen (Wellington), Miss Nellie Doull (Wellington), Miss Beryl Ward (Wellington), and Miss Betty Jacomb {Hawera). '
