AUSTRIA'S ISOLATION
ITALIAN ATTITUDE DEFINED

ROME. 27th August.
Dr. Seipel, thel Austrian Chancellor, conferred. with Signor Schanzer at \ferona,- and pointed out that Austria must seek a union with Germany, the Little Entente, or Italy. Signor-,Schanzer replied that Italy could-not permit the first two proposals, or any solution altering the status quo under the . Treaty .ot St. Germain. ; ■ .-. ■■ ''■
Dr. Seipel then sought a Customs and economic union, which, though not dam- ( aging Italy, won}d prove'a..valuable remedy for Austria's isolation and financial paralysis. Signer Schanzer replied that Italy was willing to'consider this I scheme, but an agreement would be impossible before the League of Nations reached a decision relating/to Austria. He undertook to press Austria's case before the League. , ;
