SMOKING ON CARS
TO IHB CDITOI. Sir, —I would like to correot th» wriler of the letter appearing under tho above' heading in your Saturday's ' issue. "Traveller" has evidently overlooked several facts connected with his. composition with Chrißtchuroh, and his suggestion that the trouble here would cease if the roar half 6f the open seats were reserved for smokers, is very misleading to the general public. As many of your readers are probably a-wavo, double-deck trailers aro used to a great extent in the Cathedral City, which, of course, relieves th» demand for smoking apace in the singledeck or leading car. Then, so far as his statement that the windows in the enclosed cabins are rarely open, my experience of th» Wellington trams is that tho windows are seldom, if ever, entirely closed,, and that the" cars aro very well ventilated. So much for "Traveller's" letter. Now, I would suggest that all the open seats be available for smokers exclusively, provided there is room elsewhoro' for non-smokers, whether nj'en or women. As anyouo will testify, congestion is often unduly caused in tho open space, 'whilst the cabins are often half empty, Thia would meau giving the conductors power to move anyone inside who is not actually smoking, provided, of course, there is a smoker searching vainly for a siiufc. —I am. etc., TOWN TRAVELLER. 19th 'August.
