COLLEGE TOURNAMENT
WELLINGTON BEAT WANGANUL
The annual triangular. inter-college Bugby tournament between Wellington, Wanganui and Christ's Colleges opened on the Wellington College ground on Saturday afternoon with a match between Wanganui and' Wellington. After a most strenuous game, in which Wanganui had the \>est of the first spell and part of the second, Wellington snatched victory in. the laat ten minutes, by a couple of tries, making the final score : Wellington 21, Wanganui IS. There was a most representative attendance of old -boys , and iffiends^'of thei colleges anil the general public, "and the game was followed with much enthusiasm. 'The Governor General and a party from Government Hones watched the match.
The following were the teams :— Wanganui.-r-Backs, Broad, Campbell, Ormond, Carrel, Scanlon, Blyth, Duncan; forwards, ' Bremner, Halcombe, Smith, Hare, Fairbrother, Lance, Young, Levin. ■ -•- . '
Wellington.—Backs, Grenfell, ißailey, Evans, Tait, Hanan, Fitzmaurice, Dv Chateau; forwards, M'Kenzie, Shannon, Claridge, Hislop, Hooper, Meadows, Banner, and Lawson. '
The first score came to Wellington, a try by Benner from a follow up run by M'Kenzie. Evans failed with the kick. 3-0. The Wanganui 'forwards then began to show their mettle and transferred the game to the Wellington quarter. Her* from a scrum Btyth whipped the ball to Carrel, who cut in and scored in a "position from which Campbell goaled. 5-3 in favour of Waijgapui. Wanganui soon scored again from a fine forward rush near the line. Fairbrother got over and Campbell, kicked a splendid goal from the toiiqh line* 10-3. Wellington now attacked determinedly, and Bailey had a chance on the wing,' but could "not overcome the opposition, The .score at half-time, was: Wanganui 10. Wellington 5. .
The gams looked on the face of it to Wanganuj, who had certainly had the better of it so far, The Blacks, however, opened the second spell strongly, making the game fast and, and feeding their backs better. Dv Chateau from a scrum got the ball away well, an"d away it went to the wing, and from the ruck following Lnrson secured and scored a well-earned try. Fitemaurice kicked a good goal! Wanganui 10, Wellington 8. Wanganui ajmoet immediately replied with a brilliant try,- to which Qrmond at centre contributes! the main effort, passing to Campbell at the right time for'Campbel) to cross the line and run in and round. Campbell converted his own try. Wanganui 15, Wellington 8. Wellington were not dismayed and renewed their efforts^ and th» pace was hot to a degree. The efforts of the Blanks were rewarded by a particularly fine try, a solus effort by ■Fitzmaurice, •who, getting the ball nicely from Dv Chateau near the Wanganui twenty-five, neatly played the dummy on the Wanganui defence and sidled-through to Bcor« between the posts. ■He converted hl« try and brought the score' to 15-13, Wangiwui still leading. . " /Acre was not overmuch time left, but Wellington were playing in the winning spirit. The Wellington forwards dominating their opponent*, made the way open for the .backs. Hanan intercepting near half-way raced down the line and scored at the; corner. Tinder a tackle. The kick was too much for Fitzmaurice. Wellington were now a .point ahead. 16-15. It was still anybody's game, but Wellington made it theirs by another fine try, Hanan scoring in succession to a passing rush from Dv Chateau and Fitzmaurice. Fitzmaurice kicked a, good goal, and tile whistle went for time with the score,' Wellington 21. Wanga,nui 15. Mr. A. E. NeiUon controlled the g«n« excellently. N
