INDIAN WOMEN ORGANISE

The first women workers' union was formed in India recently by the leaders of the Indian Trade Union Congress. In Bombay the Congress instituted a move in this direction with the view to the formation of a. central body. The women of Bombay decided to form a, Women's • Workers' Federation. , The 'following resolution was passed, and it was decided to affiliate with the International Congress of-Working Women:— '-That in view of the present unorganised state' of women workers, their terrible housing conditions, the lack of proper facilities for the care and education of their children, the low standard of their wages' and the general conditions of their employment, it is resolved by this mass meeting of Bombay ladies that, the \yomen workers of Bombay be organised under the auspices of the Women Workers' Federation of India in order that they may'take such, steps as may be deemed essential for the. betterment and uplift of 'the lives'of the) women workers .of India."

' According to the Indian Labour Bulletin, one speaker stated that there was Ho "home-life for the the working women. A Government official had stated recently that in Bombay she found 30 peo'plo living in one. room .16 x 12, and:that there was one woman actually in the .throes of child-birth and two expectant mothers, among* these 30 people who were all worse' housed than cattle. The lot of the Indian working chut* to-day is indeed the; hardest of -any in th» world.
