NOTES.

The request for a special meeting of delegates to consider a motion -to the effect (that the Management Committee 'of the Wellington Rugby Union consist of 15 members (a representative of each senior dub' and five, representatives' of junior dubs) received another set-back at this week's meeting of the committee, which again pointed out, as on a previous occasion, that the request bad to be signed by delegates. The names of ten club secretaries were attached. The secretary of the Berhampore Club, in a covering letter, stated that those signatures met-the requirements of the rule, whioh read that a requisition was to be signed by "or on behalf of" club delegates. The Management' Committee was not satisfied, however, that .the - matter was in order, and again referred it back. Some delegates of clubs mentioned on the requisition were not, it was believed, in favour of the notice of motion. . A proposal that the Wellington A representatives, who are to go on tour in the South next month, should be provided with hat bands bearing a monogram has not met with the approval of the W.B.U. Management Committee. The representatives, however, are to be provided with lapel badges. x

■ A letter from the Otago Rugbjr Uni<ro to the Wellington Union contains the following :-r-"I have to advise you that Hawkes Bay declined to count the match against Otago as a shield .match, and, therefore, we are unable to make outmatch with you on the 9th September a shield match." Otago defeated Hawkes Bay after the latter had won the shield from Wellington.

The 'manager of the Auckland team, now on tour, has stated that the Auckland Union i» holding its own against the League. Six yean ago the union was owing £4000; to-day it owed nothing.' It was true where the union got a £100 gate.the League got a £200 one, but the -latter charged twice the price of admission to their ground. Five years ago the union opened its gates to the public, and simply charged od for a seat in the stand. The people can enter the ground free.

One 6f the most important matches in the intermediate • strode competition was not played last Saturday owing to the non-attendance of a referee. The teams,. Karori and Selwyn A, were on the ground, Kelburn Park, at the appointed time, but,as the referee failed to put in an appearance they decided not to Rlay and to report the matter to the Rugby Union. The report has'since been handed" on to the Referees' Association. . *- • .

In the opinion of a correspondent (Francis Douglas), referees, should exercise a more strict control of games in Wellington. "After witnessing ti\e exhibition of Rugby given by Petone, afid Poneke," he states,. "I am of the opinion that someone should make a protest at the manner in which the different games have been controlled by our referees. .The game itself, was the roughest I have witnessed this season, and I think the man, in charge of the whistle,, committed an error for not cautioning the players for their illegal tactics. .You can forgive anything missed in the tight play, but when glaring instances take place out in the open there is no excuse whatever." The appointment of a referee for to-day's match, from men of the; calibre .of .Messrs. Simpson (Wellington)',- Peake and "Dutchy" Evans (Christchurch) would have been advisable. Such appointments would eliminate the rough .element and enable the public to ace the game of Rugby" as it should be played. The correspondent suggests that some competent members of the Referees' Association have been given inferior games on account of an unsatisfactory method of making appointments. ,
