AFTER 50 YEARS
FAREWELL TO A POPULAR HEADMASTER.' ' An official farewell was {wdered last evening to Mr F. Bennett, who re'retiring from the headmastership of the Beihampore School. The gathering took place at the school, Mar E Bmd (chairman of the School committee) presiding Mr Duncan, on behalf of the scholars and staff of the school, presented Mr. Bennett with a handsomo marble clock. He congratulated Mr. Bennett on - his" long and meritorious service, and wished him and Mrs Bennett every enjoyment of the ease and comfort to which their services to the community entitled them At the conclusion of Mr Duncan's remarks, one of the infant children of the school presented Mrs. Bennett with a bouquet Mr. Bennett, in his Teply, referred to the iact that two of the teaching staff, Miss Scott and Mies Hurley, had been atached to- the school since it was first opened Speaking of the changes that 'had been made in, the education system during hu experience, 'Mr. Bennett described .some i amusing features of bygone schools. The boys and, girls of today, he said, were living in a golden age— an age of great privileges, and if they tried to make their work a pleasure, their efforts would surely bring a suitable reward Amid load cheering Mr. Bennett then thanked Mr Duncan, as representative of the scholars and staff, foi their '^useful gift ■' Speeches appropriate to the occasion were rfiade by the Mayor, Messrs G. Mitchell, M.P, T Forsyth, E Dixon, MP. (a pupil of Mt Bennett forty-one years ago), H. A, Parkmson, and J J The Chairman' later spoke in glowing terms of the appreciation .of, Berhampore residents towards'Mr. .Bennett, 'and on their behalf he presented the retiring hjodmastei with a suitably-engraved silver tea, service. " After' thanking the chairman for the gift from the people of the district, Mr. .Bennett asked for his successor, Mr. 0. JBary. 'whom he knew personally, as a capable and experienced man, tho support and co-operation of pupils and parents that he himself had received.
