The following programme has been adopted by the Ashhurat Racing Club for the dab's annual race meeting to be held on 22nd November, the total amount of the stakes allotted being £1300:—Hack Hurdles, 140 soys, one mile and a half; Pohangina Handicap, 200 soys, six furlongs; flying Hack, 140' soys, six furlongs; Ashhurst Cup, 300 soys, one. mile and a quarter; Komako Hack, 140 soys, seven furlongs; Maiden Stakes, 100 soys, five furlongs; Baumai Welter, 170 soys, seven 'furlongs; ManawatU; Gorge Hack Welter, 140 soys, one mile. It was decided to remove the present loose-boxes and stalls to the eastern 'side of the new, saddling paddock, and erect eighteen new stalls on the north end. These improvements will give a fine, roomy paddock, with full accomi. modation for horses.

The Hawkes Bay-bred Humnos (Hymettus—Paean) was among.the winners at Brisbane this month.

At the Newmarket :. (England) blood stock sales on 28th June, several yearlings from the National Stud brought high prices. Sir H. Cunliffe-owen paid 4000 guineas for a colt by Sir Archibald —Coronation IV., and 2400 guineas for a colt by Spearmint—Counteas Zia. At 3300 guineas r Mr. E. Marsh secured the colt by Phararis—Eagle's Eest; the British Blood Stock Agency, a 'filly by The Tetrarch—Dolabella, 1850 guineas; and Mr. Corrigan, a filly by Swynford— Flaming Vixen, 1800 guineas. The declaration of handicaps for the North Taranaki Hunt Club's Meeting had been deferred until after the Egmont Meeting*. -.'" Homage (Absurd— Eulogy), the two-year-old full water to Humbug, Fulsome, and Epitaph, and Water Wings (Absurd —Sea Elf), the two-year-old full sister to Mermin,,are stated to be doing good work on the tracks at Wanganui. The annual meeting of members of the Wellington Trotting Club will be heJd on 13th September. The .baJance-sbeet U be presented shows.that th« club is in « healthy financial condition. Awwts, including, a cash balance of £2247 10s, axe valued at £3177, and the club has no liabilities. ' -;'■ One of the matrons submitted at the1 Highden clearing eal» that did not find a purchaser was Quip. She was, later on, sold privately, and sent to the other eidie. "Teviotdale,".; in thw "Australasian," 'thus .refers to her: Mr. Horace Sitwell is mating his beautifullybred New Zealand mair« Quip with Isle of Arraai, who is by The Welkin; from Aristo, by Cyllens out of Perleonic, by Persimmon. Quip is by Absurd out of Adelicia, by Charlemagne 11. out of Angela by Multiform. A rare bi* of mating this, and Isle of Arran is wlceiving a chance which may make him. In the course of his address at the annual meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, the president, Sir Edwin'MitchelBoni said that during the season £73,550 was paid away to winning owners, < the largest sum-ever given in stakes by any racing club in New Zealand. The shrinkage in the totalisator returns and the uncertaintyas to .the'future in this connection had combined to make a reduction in stakes. for the present season inevitable. The classic events, however, would show an increase of £1800,! to which the club had committed itself before the decline in totalisator /receipts became manifest. It; was surely obvious that taxation of a staggering nature could not be long endured except by the strongest of clubs. The weaker ones, especially one-day clubs, must assuredly go to the wall or suspend their operations. . The, Wanganui J;C. has reduced the stakes for its two-days'- Spring Meeting from 5000 soys last, season to 4475. soys this year. The Guiheas, which was 500 soys last September," carries a stake of 650 sove next month. The annual general meeting of the members'of the Auckland Trotting Club

takes place; on Monday next. The bal-ance-sheet discloses a, very healthy state of affairs financially, and, despite the prevailing depression, the profit and loss account shows a profit of £6427 12s Sd .ori the season's working. The club's as-

sets:are very sound, and altogether members have every reason to be' highly pleased with the figures placed before them, which are striking evidence to excellent .management.
