A BRAVE OFFICER
CONSTABLE WELSON EULOGISED.

AUCKLAND, 10th July. At the inquest in connection with the death of Nathaniel Hayden,-the victim of the fire in Grey-street, on the morning of 16th June, the Coroner (Mr. Wilson) complimented Constable Welson op the part he took in endeavouring to save deceased. Constable Welson stated in evidence that with a fireman he went into an upstairs room, which wai full of smoke. The fireman was overcome, and witness assisted him down a ladder. Witness entered another room in search of deceased, but was himself overcome, and did not remember being carried out. Subsequently,, witness again .entered the house. •■
The 'Coroner said "You went the burning bnilding on three occasions at the risk of your1 own life; For a very long time I Have had a great afimiration for the deeds of members of the Police Force, which is a force the public should be proud of. I feel that by your effort on the morning of .this fire you have added something to the honours list of the force. I will make a special representation to the Minister of Justice concerning your brave act, which I trust will be suitably - f recognised." '■:■• '• -
