THE MUNICIPAL MILK SUPPLY
DEPARTMENT'S BIG ACHIEVEMENT
SUCCESS OF NEW SYSTEM OF DE.
LIVERY,
The Wellington City Council is probably the only municipal authority in the world which has a complete ,mon- "■: opoly of the delivery of milk. For three -i years the department supplied the ven-Ci-dors who, in turn, delivered the milk t0.,...;'. the householders, but from yesterday* V the Council will deliver on its own acr ■ count. -The Wellington City Council has ~> been grappling seriously with the milk' ~■■ problem for over five years and the ob- " jective, municipal delivery of bottled milk in exchange for coupons, has at ■' last been reached. The opposition has " been tremendous. The private vendors , ■ have now lost their business, .for whicli:'.■;.; the citizens have paid a substantial goodwill. All that remains to complete the scheme and establish it surely in-favour ■ with, the people is a. reduction. in the ' price of milk, and an announcement, which should satisfy those who are-call- ' ing out against exorbitant charges will-?", be made soon: , 18,000 BOTTLES DISTRIBUTED.."-} Yesterday's big change over was effec£ ed without any inconvenience to a veryx large section of the people: The rounds- " men worked under tremendous difficulties, but consumers in every block were supplied With bottled milk. Over 18,000 .; bottles of milk were distributed'during the day, and the only serious trouble occurred in the north end of the city; There is a suggestion that the trouble was due to the disloyalty to the council of several of the distributors.-A number of men went out with their'carts loaded with bottles, and returned .with the. mi'ik three hours later, and resigned! I Spare roundsmen had been released, so if some householders did not receive: their morning milk until the afternoon'•'.it -wopiff be scarcely fair of them -' to blame • the' - City Council for the.delay;; -MEmy of the roundsmen who were employed ryesterdav, distributed milk in .portions 'of the city quite unknown to them, ■ and they deserve credit for the measure -nf success they achieved. The number of complaints received by the department' this morning was surprisingly small. Today things worked much more sroootWv than they did yesterday, and by the .en &. of the week the_ whole scheme should be in proper working order. ■ ,-•
