DIEECT SHIPPING AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Direct shipping and the future before the port of New Plymouth formed the subject of a brief discussion at the meeting of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce last week. The Secretary of the Taranaki Chamber wrote stating that a C. and D. liner would be sailing from London about 20th September, making New Plymouth a port of discharge. It was requested that as much publicity as possible should be given to the matter, and that all possible support be given to the firm responsible for despatching the steamer, that firm having asked for no guarantee of support. The chairman said this direct shipping was a very important matter to the district, and he hoped it would be supported. While on the subject of shipping, the chairman referred to the proposed passenger vessel to go from New Plymouth. to Sydney next year, us arranged by the chairman of the Taranaki Chamber (Mr. T. C. List). Members expressed the opinion that the people of^ Taranaki owed a debt of thanks to Sir. List for the part he had taken in the matter, and they thought the proposed trip would be well patronised. The chairman said that if New Plymouth was made a commodious and safe port, all the passenger services between Australia and New Zealand should come via New Plymouth.
