INTERESTING GAMES AT KARORI

The hockey' competitions were advanced a'further stage o n Saturday afternoon under ideal weather conditions. The grounds at Karon Park, the centre of the stick games in Wellington, were in first-class order, and the games played there, were''alt of a highly interesting nature—closely and keenly contested. The surprise" of the day ,was the defeat of Ramblers by Petone by 'two goals to one. The suburban team played good hookey all through, and proved to be the better team on the day. Wakatu did not have matters all their own way with 'Wellington-United) although securing a win by two goals to nil.* Huia 'and Karori, who have been fighting keenly for the wooden spoon all through the season, met for the first time, and very appropriately played a drawn game— one goal each. Out at the Hutt, the- - local team easily accounted for Wesley. 'University, who are now on level terms with Wakatu at the top of the chain. * pionship ladder, had a bye. The match between Petone and Ramblers, played on No. 1 ground, at- ■ tracted a large number of spectators.. Both teams played a good open game, and the ball travelled around in great style. Petone had the best of- the first spelV but failed to finish off several promising movements, the shooting of the forwards being their weak point. Ramblers initiated a clever passing rush towards the end of the spell, and from this Smith, -who played a \saund game' on the left wing, sent in a shot, which found' its way past Harvey, the Petone gv^-.-.eeper. . /\- • The second «pell opened with the Petone men again attacking, and this time their efforts were rewarded by two goals, which came in quick succession. Oavell secured the "white" from a good centre by G. Webley, and sent it flying into the n©t. 'A few minutes later the movement was repeated those responsible on this occasion being W. Taplin and A. Webleyi Somewhat taken by surprise at the'tiwn of the game. Ramblers settled down to more solid play, out the Petone backs successfully defended their goal mouth until the final whistle blew. The final score was: Petone 2, Ramblers 1. Harvey, Martin, Ha.rtley, and Scott were the pick of the Petone eleven, and for Ramblers, Paget, Ebbett, Smith, and Fredericks worked well. Karori and Huia, who have been hovering ne*r the bottom of the championship * ladder all the season, each added an- , other point to their tally on Saturday^ for they played a drawn game—one all. The teams were very evenly matched, - and no score occurred until the end of ' the game. By defeating Wellington-United by ■two goals :to nil, Wakatu placed themselves on level terms witn University at the head of the championship ladder. • D.
