CHILDREN'S PLAY AREA

Much sincere and hearty interest was shown at the meeting of ladies held in a committee-room at the Town Hall in connection with the proposed play area for children. Mr. G A. Troup, president of the Boys' Institute, and other leading citizens, have taken the matter up, and are being well supported by Wellington women, who realise jvhat proper-ly-conducted play-areas will do lor the children of the city. Arrangements have been made for conveying flowers, produce, and all saleable food to the city on the street day. The railways will carry free, also the Union Steam Ship Company and the Anchor Company, therefore it is hoped that flowers, etc., will come from. North and South. It was arranged to have four collecting boxes for each stall; also that badges be sold, and that stallholders wear arm-bands bearing the words "Play Area." Mr. Butler announced that collecting cards were ready for those who would take them.- He also stated that Mr. Fuller had promised to put on a matinee any Wednesday afternoon. It was arranged, however, that tickets for this should not bo sold on the Street Day. Placards were also to be placed on the cars, and the Chairman announced that the expenses were being kept down to a minimum, so that stallholders might rest assured—that when itheir money was counted, very little would have to come off the total amount. The Young Citizens' League of Auckland had been 'asked to assist with flowers, and the school children were being asked to bring some. It was announced that several motor-cars had been placed at the .disposal of the committee, and the treasurer (Mr. Brown) would collect money during the day, a room being placed at their disposal at. the Town Hall. Messrs. Bethune and Co. had offered their room in Brandon-street as a receiving depot from the 12th to the 14th, and goods could be sent there, when they would be distributed to the stalls. During the day two community "sings" will bo conducted, one at the King's Theatre and the other at Post Office-square, and collections from, these would be added to the day's taking.
