. The whole question ol gambling is at present confused by numerous anomalies in the Commonwealth. Thus in Brisbane, while the State Government seized a legal technicality, with which to smite the shady lane-betting that rioted throughout city and suburbs, it continues.-to run a- colossal gambling concern known.'. as Golden Casket that handles many thousands of pounds sterling each week. The Federal Government is equally inconsistent, for though it officially bans the' big periodic Tasmanian sweepstake (Tattersall's), it regularly pockets part of that concern's winnings by taxing its successful plung-
The new. Ministry .in New South Wales*, abashed-at the realisation that some 300.lottery applications per annum are lodged in that State, intends to shut up-the gambling agents within its own borders who "correspond, with Brisbane." Queensland's Golden Casket is therefore likely to lose some of its lucrative southern trade, even if New South Wales Ministry has to • invoke the reformatory aid of ■ postal .inhibitions. '
