ALL READY

MUNICIPAL MILK DELIVERY

SUNDAY'S BIG CHANGE-OVER.

' Councillor C. J. B. Norwood; chairman of the City Conncil's Milk Committee, was able to state definitely today that the Milk Deparment would be in a position to take over the delivery of milk to the whole of the city ou the due date, 12th July. It is hoped, too, that all the milk will bo delivered in bottles according to plan. The washing and filling machinery has been installed at the milk station' in ■ Dixon-street. This machinery is most intricate and wholly atitomatic, and, consequently, adjustments are necessary. So far the trial runs have given every satisfaction, and there is reason to hope, that they will do their work thoroughly in time for Sunday morning's delivery. However, householders are requested to put out their receptacles and coupons as usual, until tlie initial bottle is actually delivered. After that, they .will put out the empty bottle with the coupon inside, and it will be-replaced by another bottle of fresh milk.

It should be thoroughly understood that the first bottle is supplied by the 'department ' free''of charge, but tho householders will bo held responsible for breakages, which must be replaced at the following rates : • Ono pint, 4d each; .li pints;, 6d each; one' quart, 8d each.. Should a bottle'be broken or crateked, cash equivalent to .the cost of a new bottle must' be placed with the coupon ■ before, any. fresh supply of miik con be obtained from the, roundsmen. Householders will 'also be permitted to purchase extra- bottles in order that .they will be ready for sudh an emergency. Further, it might so happen that on any one day they would require an extra supply of milk, and, therefore, a second bottle. . ' ..

Oii and after Sunday, no-milk will be supplied unless the coupon is offered. The onus is on the householders to secure their coupons, which can be. purchased from any of the many agencies which have been established throughout the city and suburban districts. The agencies are recorded on a card which is no>v being distributed to every house. Bdundsmen are positively forbidden to sell milk:for cash. . \

If cream is required, on any day, all that is necessary is for the consumer to leave out a cream 'coupon or cash equivalent to the quantity of cream.required. ' Cream will be sold in sealed cups, at 6d. Is, and 2s per cup. /.

The milk' department is now working at high pressure in order to be prepared for the big change over which is to take place on' Sunday—the consummation of years of effort to secure for Wellington a supply of pure milk. As the people are becoming used to the use of coupons there has been a remarkable falling off in the number of complaints against the system. Councillor Norwood said he did not anticipate any difficulty in that direction. •■ : ■ ■-. ■ •■' - > : .-' ;

. Each householder is asked to wash the bottles. after they have been emptied. This will not be the only washing the bottles /will receive.; Each bottle on arrival at the depot will be specially treated and placed above a powerful' jet of steam and. thoroughly cleansgd. . '
